Update on collegiate golfers

Here’s an update on our two Kincardine, Ont. golfing stars.

Brianna Cooper’s Illinois State Redbirds wrapped up their fall season by finishing 9th of 18 teams at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Cooper shot rounds of 75-76-73 to finish 20th in the Oct. 24-25 event.

At the Oct. 17-18 Hoosier Fall Invitational at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., Cooper led the Redbirds by shooting 79-75-73 and finishing 8th. The team finished 11th out of 13 teams.

Fellow Kincardine golfer Taylor Schmidt has also enjoyed success this fall.

Her University of Oklahoma team won two consecutive events - the Golf Week Conference Challenge in Edwards, Colorado and the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Oklahoma - and finished the season with a fourth place finish at the 16-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev.

At the Oct. 24-26 Las Vegas event Schmidt shot rounds of 72-76-76 to finish third on her team and 24th overall.

At the Susie Maxwell event on the Sooners home course - the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club - Schmidt shot rounds of 75-71-71 to finish second on her team and tied for 10th overall. She also turned in a solid performance at the Golf Week Challenge where her final round 72 helped her team clinch the victory. She placed 39th overall in that event.

The 26th ranked Sooners will start their spring season with the Northrop Grumman Challenge on Feb. 13-15 in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The Redbirds are back in action Feb. 4 at the Illinois Challenge in Boca Raton, Florida.

Schmidt is currently ranked 137th out of 500 collegiate women golfers, while Cooper has moved up to the 269th position with her performance this fall.
