Golfer from area in Hong Kong Open
A golfer who started playing the game as a junior at Whispering Hills Golf Club near Hanover, Ontario shot rounds of 76-72 to qualify for the Hong Kong Open. Ron Totton became the third amateur to make it into the field thanks to his steady final round at the qualifying tournament last month at the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau. "It's a lifelong dream to play in a tour event, so I'm absolutely thrilled," said the 40-year-old Totton, a member at Discovery Bay Golf Club, who fired two back-nine birdies in his level par round. "I had the belief that I could do it ... I just had that feeling today." Totton, a one-handicapper, will join fellow amateurs Shinichi Mizuno (Hong Kong Amateur Close champion) and Huang Yongle (Hong Kong Open Amateur champion) at the Hong Kong Golf Club, where they'll tee it up Dec. 1 alongside a host of European Tour stars, including reigning Hong Kong Open champion Ian Poulter, world number three Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.
Totton grew up in the Hanover area, attending Holy Family elementary school and playing in junior golf tournaments at local clubs.
He now lives in Hong Kong with his wife Emily and two daughters.
