Schmidt helps team win title
Congrats to Kincardine native Taylor Schmidt, whose final round 72 helped her University of Oklahoma women’s golf team win the Golf Week Conference Challenge in Edwards, Colorado, this week.
She was among three players on the team to shoot even par on Wednesday, catapulting the team from sixth to first place.
Sophomore Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil not only shot even par but also claimed medalist honours for the first time in her collegiate career. She had a three-round total of 217 (+1) and won by 3 strokes.
The other Sooner shooting a final-round 72 was sophomore Jade Staggs, who ended up tied for 43rd in the 90-player field.
Schmidt, who has returned to action after sitting out the spring season due to surgery, shot 77 & 83 on the first two days of the tournament. She finished 39th.
Fellow Canadian Ann-Catherine Tanguay shot rounds of 75-74-75 to finish tied for 8th, while the other member of the team, Jacki Marshall shot rounds of 79-77-82 to finish tied for 61st.
At the Sept. 11-13 Texas A & M “Mo” Morial Invitational Schmidt competed as an individual and ended up tied for 16th place. She shot rounds of 78-77-73 which put her in a tie for 2nd among her teammates, only one stroke behind the top Soooner,
Jao-Javanil. The team finished 7th in the 12-team event, which was held at the par 72 Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
